Fighting Rust!
#1
Thumbs Down
Alright. Well i definitely have rust in my 73 Mach That im fighting at the moment. Id just like to share the technique ive been referred to and chose to use. opinions welcomed.

-Step One: Blow off, Sand, and maybe Lightly grind off heavy patches of rust on panels withought being too aggresive (remember your trying to salvage the part).

Step Two: In a well ventilated area, While wearing chemical resistant gloves, a respirator, and even some goggles, (I do urge the use of a mask designed for vapors. Such as a auto painter would use).
Take Muriatic acid, I buy mine from our paint and chemical supplier but you may find it at hardware stores, or yard and garden stores.

Step three: if its small, you could submerge the rusted metal, if large you can brush the acid on, keep the rusted areas covered with the acid re apply, re apply, re apply it. Try to agitate the rust maybe with a hard bristled brush. it will slowly but surely eat it off leaving raw metal.
(Use caution during this process this chemical can be very dangerous.)

Step Four: Neutralize the acid. The only way i know to neutralize muriatic acid is with water. so rinse and dry.

Step Four: If your happy with what step four has done move on to step 5 but if youd like to go the extra mile in removing and preventing rust. i suggest a solution called -> OSPHO <- I do not know the properties of it but it is the SH*T. After completely drying the rust in step four. while still wearing your respirator and gloves apply ospho to the part/panel with a spray bottle. spray at least two even coats. Allow to dry over night. dont rush it. The next day a coating of ospho will cover your part and any pits or remaining rust patches will be the color black. any remaining rust and ospho needs to be sanded off i suggest an 80 grit sandpaper on a 6 inch DA sander. Once completely sanded blow off dust.

( Please keep in mind through every step, your panel will now be raw metal, by touching the metal with bare hands you leave the possibility of future rust to form from the oils on your hands. i suggest wearing gloves at all times)

Step Five: SEAL METAL. This step is very important and must be done following the steps above. (Raw exposed metals will again form rust if left exposed) so now Prime the metal with at least two good coats of primer, i cant put the name of the brand or type of primer i use but ill update that later.

Now shes good to go. Some patching pr filling may be necessary if parts or panels have rusted through but they are now rust free :) :) :).

Hope this may help anybody fighting rust like i have been.

Fighting rust is always a pain. However alot of the info you have provided is very good and effective. I am currently working on my 89 f150 and its got some rusty spots and so far acitone and some 80 grit sand paper have worked wonders for me honestly the best way to fight rust is to make sure that when its all said and done and painted it gets good care to prevent rust from coming back Biggrin
