I know the earlier 289 heads (63-67) have the slotted guides so guide plates would not be necessary. If your heads do not have the slotted guides and you plan on using a high lift high rpm cam it would not be a bad idea to use guide plates First it is a relatively inexpensive insurance policy and second they will prevent/reduce the push rods from flexing at higher rpm's.

I know exactly where your comming from,I just dont need to burn a new set of chrm molly push rods and send off for heat treated, not to mention the need for milling down the bosses.

I am not quite sure I answered your question regarding the use of guide plates but another thought is on this matter is checking your valve train geometry after installing the screw in studs. The machine shop doing the work could better advise you on the matter.

Im sure they can Ill take the heads in as soon as Ive inspected them for any other obvious problems that may be lurking about.

Smoke update.
Well I decided to bite the bullit and pull her down and run an autopsy, talk about a barrel of monkeys, never always trust when people sell a car with a rebuild!!
the machine work was all done, but what a mess inside. 3 upside down 2nd compression rings, twisted rings, (not using ring expander) leaking manifold gasket, lifter gallery to inlet, you know the black felpro soft comp type yeek!
2x 1/2 K linner remnants in the sump + alot of metal shavings and it wouldnt be compleat without and oil pump shaft retainer floating around inside, 1 x upside down head gasket and not to remention the 1" over sized std pushrods used on a roller cam. I know the Americans have a butt load of good engine builders, I was just unlucky.

The wife just thinks Im out there listening to the radio.

Any how Ive rebuilt the bottom end and working on the heads now.

Yeah I think it will be worth it when its all going again, besides 2 bent valves in the heads, the rest looks fine , still dont know where the k linners came from, they were all intact, I believe they were remnants from the cutting process..
